Our Honey Porter is a staple in our portfolio of beers. Its sweet, yet robust flavors are what bring fans back time and time again. It’s the best of both worlds! The Jersey Fresh certified honey pairs perfectly with the notes in our take on a brown porter.
That’s why we love pushing the boundaries when it comes to our award-winning Honey Porter, putting twists on this beer when we can. We decided to shake things up a bit, creating Mike’s Hot Honey Porter. You all loved it so much, it inspired us to keep the ball rolling.
[Ed note: or, the beer brewing, pun-intended.]
When creativity strikes our team, there is no stopping us.
So we thought to ourselves, what would happen if we combined our brown porter with something that everyone loves? This sweet treat is something that has been bringing people together for generations. Family and friends gather around the campfire, sharing stories and laughing while enjoying this gooey, chocolatey delight.
Any guesses?
Say hello to our newest creation, S’mores Porter!
We love to give you a behind the scenes look on our brewing process, so we did a Q & A with our Lead Brewer, Brad Young, to bring you the information first-hand.
Q: How was S’mores Porter made?
A: S’mores Porter starts out with a very nice and traditional English porter recipe. We used all high quality British malts in brewing this beer: Maris Otter for our base malt (which, in my humble opinion, is the finest base malt you can get), pale chocolate malt for color and a nice subtle, you guessed it, CHOCOLATE flavor, medium crystal malt to add a bit of that lovely caramel sweetness, brown malt for more color, and torrefied wheat, which gives the finished beer a nice body. This is not a hop forward beer at all so only a token amount of hops are added to balance the malt sweetness and make this beer well rounded and drinkable. After all those perfectly fine traditional ingredients, we got weird with it. We added a ton of graham cracker crumbs to the mash tun, along with all of those fine English malts that I listed, and as the wort (aka unfermented beer) boiled we added buckets of marshmallow fluff and a hefty amount of chocolate chips. Safe to say this was the most delicious smelling beer to come through our brewhouse!
Q: How did you come up with the idea?
A: The idea came from our wonderful and creative marketing team! If I remember correctly, Alicia, our Director of Marketing, suggested this idea and we went to work with it.
Q: What is your favorite part about this beer?
A: I'm going to say my personal favorite part of this beer is the malt bill that we built this beer around, if you couldn't tell by my detailed description from the first question. I love using high quality British malts and brewing English-style beers. The depths of flavor you can get out of how you handle these malts never cease to amaze me.
Q: Any final thoughts?
A: I’m excited for fans to try this. It’s a fun take on a classic style, while the fun flavors of chocolate, marshmallow and graham cracker jump out, all the good parts of fine English beer can still be found and appreciated.
